| Martin Brand ATTACK February 2006, Carnival in Cologne. The camera searchingly pans throughout the masses of visitors; the image is out of focus, surroundings and people are only vaguely recognizable. Then the camera zooms out and focuses in on a group of young men, who pose in front of the camera by dancing around, swinging their bottles of beer. All of a sudden the previously exhilarating ambiance shifts and ends in a gestural and verbal attack directed at the camera. As an observer facing the actors vis-à-vis, one experiences the attack as if being actually directed at oneself. Memories of and associations to comparable experiences, in which oneself was confronted with unexpected aggressiveness are awakened. At the same time, the irration caused by the costumes of the three young men – unintentionally adding a comical nuance to the happening – remains. The video image initially played at half-speed, is increasingly slowed down, until it finally almost freezes into a fixed-image. Februar 2006, Karneval in Köln. Die Kamera schwenkt suchend durch die Besuchermassen, das Bild ist unscharf, nur vage sind Umfeld und Personen zu erkennen. Dann zoomt die Kamera aus und nimmt eine Gruppe junger Männer in den Fokus, die tanzend und mit ihren Bierflaschen schwenkend vor der Kamera posieren. Mit einem Mal kippt die bis dahin ausgelassene Stimmung und es kommt zu einer auf die Kamera ausgerichteten gestischen wie verbalen Attacke. Als Betrachter erlebt man die Attacke unmittelbar auf sich selbst bezogen, da man zentral den Akteuren gegenübersteht. Erinnerungen und Assoziationen an selbst erlebte vergleichbare Situationen, in denen man mit unvermuteter Aggressivität konfrontiert wurde, werden wach. Gleichzeit bleibt die Irritation durch die Kostümierung der drei jungen Männer, die dem Geschehen eine unfreiwillig komische Nuance verleiht. Das von Beginn an bereits in halber Geschwindigkeit abgespielte Videobild wird zunehmend so stark verlangsamt, dass es zum Ende hin fast zu einem Standbild einfriert. © 2006 Martin Brand |
